MOTHERS DAY PDF Print E-mail

For Dr Christine and I this mother's day was our best ever.  With the kids now being 3 and 1 they sure are getting to be alot of fun and can participate in some of these festivities.  They also help keep us centered on what's really important.  With both of us being chiropractors, it's easy to spend most of our time thinking of and caring for others and forget about ourselves and those closest to us.  Days like yesterday remind us that when we take care of ourselves we leave ourself in a much better situation to take even better care of others.  Thank you to all you moms out there who always put others, especially your children first, the world is a better place by you being in it... but don't forget about yourselves!  I guess that maybe that's the whole point of Mother's Day.  - Dr. Ryan Bowman

SWINE FLU PDF Print E-mail

In the news we have been hearing a lot about the swine flu. The swine influenza virus appears to be spread from one person to another. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. A person cannot get swine flu from eating pork products.

The population of the United States is approximately 304,000,000. The reported cases of swine flu in the U.S. was last reported somewhere around 70. Therefore, the chance that you may get this strain is .0000002326.

The best way to avoid getting sick is through prevention. Boost your immune system by making sure to wash your hands and practice proper hygiene. Stay in good general health and get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Research shows that getting adjusted by a chiropractor can boost your immune system. A study done by Dr. Ronald Pero, Ph.D, chief of cancer prevention research of NYU Preventive Medicine Institute measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in general population and those with other serious diseases. The chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than those people in the general population who have not received care and a 400% greater competence than those with cancer and other serious diseases. Dr. Pero also found the immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not appear to diminish with age. Make sure chiropractic is part of your prevention plan.

TULIPS by Dr. DeBoer PDF Print E-mail

Tulips…

It’s that time of year again when all of nature explodes in life after a long and dormant winter season.

As I’m out on my runs lately, I’ve been noticing that some tulips are beginning to poke up from the ground and it won’t be long now until we can once again enjoy their beauty.

A few tips about tulips…

  • The tulip is the third most popular flower in the world.
  • Tulips are an actively traded commodity in Holland.
  • At one time in Holland, tulip bulbs were more highly sought than gold or silver.

I was thinking about tulips the other day and it occurred to me that these magnificent flowers can be a reminder of our own bodies…
If you want to have a beautiful bed of tulips coming up from the ground this time of year, you have to spend some time in the fall getting ready. You must first dig and prepare the soil, plant the bulb and give it adequate food so that when it germinates in the spring, it will have something to grow on.
Our bodies are very similar… if we want to have a healthy body, we have to start thinking about it in advance. We can’t just decide one day that we don’t like what we’ve got and go out and get a healthy body. It takes some work and dedication.
Our chiropractic patients know that it can take time to see results but that if they stay with it and follow their recommended care plan, more often than not, you will get the results you are looking for.
Fortunately, just like the beautiful tulip bloom, if we take the time to exercise our bodies pay attention to the foods that we give it, and get adjusted on a regular basis, we too can have a body that we can be proud of.

A THOUGHT ON DRUG RESISTANCE ANTIBIOTICS PDF Print E-mail

I was doing some research today and found some statistics put out by the US department of public health.  The concern over antibiotic resistant microorganisms is increasing.  Read the following:
  • Though food-producing animals are given antibiotic drugs for important therapeutic, disease prevention or production reasons, these drugs can cause microbes to become resistant to drugs used to treat human illness, ultimately making some human sicknesses harder to treat.
  • About 70 percent of bacteria that cause infections in hospitals are resistant to at least one of the drugs most commonly used to treat infections.
  • Some organisms are resistant to all approved antibiotics and must be treated with experimental and potentially toxic drugs.
  • Some research has shown that antibiotics are given to patients more often than guidelines set by federal and other healthcare organizations recommend. For example, patients sometimes ask their doctors for antibiotics for a cold, cough, or the flu, all of which are viral and don't respond to antibiotics. Also, patients who are prescribed antibiotics but don't take the full dosing regimen can contribute to resistance.
  • Unless antibiotic resistance problems are detected as they emerge, and actions are taken to contain them, the world could be faced with previously treatable diseases that have again become untreatable, as in the days before antibiotics were developed.

Now, more than ever, we need to recognize the better health is not the result of better chemistry!

Take proper care of your body through good nutrition, exercise, and remember to give your body a rest from time to time.

Finally – Remember that Chiropractic care can have a huge impact on your overall health and specifically on the health and function of your immune system.  Many of our patients report that they stay healthier and are less susceptible to the common illnesses that go around after receiving appropriate Chiropractic care!  After all, your nervous system controls your immune system and we’re here to make sure that they are working at their optimum potential.
