MY ALLERGY BATTLE PDF Print E-mail

Our daughter, Caitlyn, is 3 years old. Memorial Day weekend, 2 years ago, she had her first asthma attack. It was one of the scariest experiences in my life! I felt completely helpless watching her lie in bed, sweating, her whole body contracting, just trying to get enough air.

This was the start of our asthma and allergy roller coaster. Each spring and fall she has the same symptoms. She starts wheezing and it may take days for the wheezing to stop. We have to stay indoors because playing outside just makes it worse. It’s pretty tough to tell a 3 year old that they can’t go outside and play because it makes it too hard for them to breathe!  This year has been no exception but her symptoms have been much worse. We finally consulted an allergist who also specializes in asthma. She agreed with my assessment that Caitlyn has an environmental allergy that triggers her asthma. Since the beginning of May, she has been taking allergy medication. She no longer has to use a rescue inhaler, the bags are gone from under her eyes, and she’s able to go outside and play!

As a chiropractor, I’ve seen countless people who have had their asthma and allergy symptoms all but disappear after beginning chiropractic care. So, how could this happen to my little girl? She’s been adjusted since birth, she has a proper diet, and she takes all the supplements that should help combat these symptoms. I have been emotionally struggling with this for the past month. But what I have finally realized is that she is still better off than most of the people out there suffering from allergies! She is well adjusted and her nervous system is working to it’s optimum. And she’s been taking her medication and she has responded very quickly. She is no longer miserable and is able to behave like a typical 3 year old! If she wasn’t adjusted regularly, making sure that her brain is able to communicate effectively with the rest of her body, she very well would not have responded to her medication as quickly and may still be battling the asthma and allergies!

TURMERIC PDF Print E-mail

Turmeric is found in curry powder and is the most powerful natural anti-inflammatory available today. Turmeric is a rhizome which is an underground stem not a root. This spice encourages cancer cell death, inhibits tumor growth, and research is beginning to show it even enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Turmeric is a natural liver detoxifier. Turmeric may prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by removing plaque buildup in the brain.

Some research shows that turmeric is most effective in humans when it's mixed with black pepper and dissolved in oil (olive or canola, preferably). The best place to buy turmeric is directly from a spice shop. When preparing turmeric fresh you may want to wear gloves because the orange can stain.

How to Use It: Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a teaspoon of olive oil and a generous pinch of ground black pepper and add to vegetables, soups, and salad dressings. If it tastes too bitter for you, add a few drops of honey or agave nectar. Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.

Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.

TRAINING PDF Print E-mail

Some of you know that I (Dr. Ryan) am training for my first marathon... which is 5 weeks from now.  I get alot of questions about my progress and I want you to know that I plan on giving more details later, and by later I mean after the race, so I can tell the whole story.  Now, I'm certainly not the first person to go through this process and I certainly won't be the last.  That said, I don't know how I could possibly do this without chiropractic.  You simply don't start like I did 11 months ago barely able to run a mile and 30 pounds overweight and train your body to run 26.2 miles without some injuries, hopefully mild, along the way.  Every time I have an issue, an ache, or a pain chiropractic gets me through it.  But not just that, my adjustments make me a better runner.  More efficient.  Faster.  I guess that's why so many athletes at the highest levels utilize chiropractic on a regular basis.

NEW ROADS PDF Print E-mail

The asphalt roads in our neighborhood are getting resurfaced this week!  They have been patched, patched, and patched again to the point where they were deteriorating rapidly... so they were long overdue.  Now we have these nice looking smooth new roads which is quite exciting.  My daughter says they are just like the roads Lightning McQueen made in the movie Cars!  Where am I going with this???

As a chiropractor, we see people all the time that have been just patching themselves up for years and often decades.  Taking ibuprofen for that low back pain or excedrin for that headache.... for example.  Meanwhile underneath the surface they are degenerating and decaying.  Through a series of ajustments whe can often do a "re-surfacing" so to speak.  Got to cut this short... want to take a spin on the new road!
