It’s back to school time again! Parents should remember the 15 percent rule to prevent serious spinal injury to your child. Your child’s backpack should weigh no more then 15 percent of his or her total body weight. For example, a 60lb child’s backpack should weigh no more then 9 pounds; an 80lb child no more then 12 pounds, etc. Also, pick out a backpack with wide padded straps and make sure your child uses both straps and hip strap if available. Make sure to weigh your child’s backpack weekly and “pop quiz” them to make sure they are using their backpack properly. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if your child complains of symptoms or if you have any questions regarding proper backpack safety. Have a happy and safe school year! |
